What is GST?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India, replacing earlier taxes like VAT and service tax. It is charged as a percentage of the sale value and is split between the central and state governments as CGST and SGST for sales within a state, or collected as IGST for sales between states.

CGST vs SGST vs IGST

For sales within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) - for example, 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For sales to a different state, the full rate is charged as IGST (Integrated GST), collected by the central government and apportioned to the destination state. The total tax paid by the buyer is the same either way - only how it is split differs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

Multiply the amount by the GST rate and divide by 100 to get the GST amount, then add it to the original amount to get the total. For example, GST at 18% on ₹1,000 is ₹180, making the total ₹1,180. Use the "Add GST" mode above to do this instantly for any amount and rate.

How do I remove GST from a total amount (reverse GST calculation)?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by (1 + GST rate/100) to get the base amount, then subtract that from the total to get the GST amount. For example, a ₹1,180 total at 18% GST has a base amount of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. Use the "Remove GST" mode above for this.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are each charged at half the total GST rate on sales within the same state - for example, 18% GST splits into 9% CGST + 9% SGST. IGST (Integrated GST) is charged at the full rate on sales between different states, and is collected by the central government and apportioned to the destination state.

What are the current GST rate slabs in India?

Following the GST 2.0 rate rationalisation effective 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, alongside the unchanged special rates of 0.25% (rough diamonds) and 3% (gold, silver and jewellery). The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were largely folded into 5%/18% and 40% respectively. These slabs are set by the GST Council and can change - always confirm the exact rate for your goods or services on the official GST portal before filing.
